Abstract
Parks and playgrounds are a great example of an outdoor third place utilized by families of all ages. Most places cater to multiple types of people by providing amenities such as picnic tables, trails, playgrounds, and an overall open area to create a comforting atmosphere. Oldenburg describes parks and playgrounds to be a great addition to physical health and a source to connect with nature. Since these third spaces are free to visit and often cater to many different people, they are a great way to foster a community, especially in the warmer months. Parks and playgrounds came about in the late 19th century. Parks were established to provide a pastoral escape and improve health. On the other hand, playgrounds were created to help with child development and provide a safe place for them to engage with others. Over time, they have evolved from a structured form of escape and safety into what we recognize as a place for fun and engagement.
