Abstract
People with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are living longer and experiencing the effects of aging and co-existing conditions in addition to their disabilities, often contributing to health disparities. Musculoskeletal conditions in many children and young adults with IDD can contribute to the development or exacerbation of other conditions associated with aging, such as osteoarthritis (OA). People with IDD exhibit OA at higher rates and earlier onsets than people without IDD. OA frequently leads to total joint replacements (TJRs) in the general population; rates of TJRs are increasing significantly in the general population, yet little is known about the rates of TJRs among adults with IDD. This review synthesized published research on the rates and outcomes of elective TJRs among adults with IDD.
