Abstract

AI is quietly reshaping what it means to be a college student, not just academically but socially and ethically as well. Research shows that the boundary between schoolwork and personal life is becoming nearly impossible to distinguish, and that over-reliance on AI for communication is actually increasing student loneliness. On the integrity side, more than half of U.S. college students were using AI for assignments by late 2023, with 86% of that use going completely undetected by instructors. Perhaps most importantly, the biggest predictor of AI misuse isn't a lack of morals. It's perceived pressure, which reframes the entire conversation from a cheating problem to a student wellbeing problem. The solution isn't stricter penalties or better detection software, but rather teaching students how to use AI responsibly with clear guidance. I started this project thinking AI was a cheating problem, and I'm ending it convinced it's a people problem.
