Abstract

With weightlifting being a popular hobby among many, the use of growth hormone peptides (GHPs) and steroids has become increasingly common to maximize muscle growth. Using such substances is supposed to increase the rate of muscle protein synthesis during rest. The purpose of the review is to evaluate the current literature on how administering growth hormone or steroids, compared with resistance training alone, affects skeletal muscle mass in healthy resistance-trained adults following a training program. By understanding some of the physiological effects of the use of GHPs/steroids, nurses cannot only better educate patients on th effects of such substances, but also provide better care for potential patients that may be on a form of GHP/steroid later on.
