Abstract

An environmental analysis of the Genesee River was conducted in 4 different locations of the Greater Rochester area to determine the presence of CECs, or chemicals of emerging concerns. The Genesee River is a tributary that flows from Potter County, Pennsylvania, all the way through PA and NYS, and exiting out into Lake Ontario, a vital freshwater resource for Rochester, NY. The river samples were collected and extracted based on the three classes of chemicals (Hormones1, Pesticides2, Acidic and Basic Pharmaceuticals/Personal Care Products3), as followed by the EPA methods, and by using the SPE HLB column. A method of determining the presence of ECs, or emerging contaminants, was used by the GC/MS through troubleshooting and validation of the method. The identification of the ECs, or potential ECs, was determined based on the MS Probability Match provided by the instrument. Further research is to be expected to determine the concentration of specific ECs.
