Abstract
Throughout time, deeply rooted historical decisions and policies have created educational gaps between suburban, rural, and urban schools. Literacy has been a rising problem in the educational field, whether it is reading, writing, or vocabulary. In this project, I examine the major literacy disparaties/gap between local Rochester schools, James Monroe High School (urban) (LOWlevel of reading proficiency) and Victor High School (suburban) (HIGH level of reading proficiency). The question is, what caused this gap? Is it the resources they have available? Is it the funding each school gets? In partnership with Professor Maylin Harter for my Education 415 Class, I administered a survey to the students that asked them a series of questions on how they felt about reading. I used that data in combination with US News Statistics on each school and dived into why there are these gaps and how the students feel about it.
