Abstract

Moving to a new country is often very challenging for immigrants, not only because they face language barriers, discrimination, and separation from their families, but also because they must adapt to an unfamiliar environment. After taking the 2500 honors course, No Cap – Real Talk on Language, Culture, and Connection, taught by Dr. Bonilla-Conejo, we explored how communication extends beyond words, examining gestures, body language, and cultural trends, and how these elements reflect identity, culture, and influence in the world. Both of us enjoyed this class, as we could relate to much of the content that was discussed, and we decided to create an Honors Contract for this course. Our Honors Contract centered on watching five films focused on the theme of immigration, highlighting the often-overlooked challenges immigrants face, such as having to acculturate and assimilate into Western culture, family separation, and more. Additionally, we found a couple of articles that also talked about how much immigrants contribute to the healthcare field, but also how they face problems accessing healthcare. Immigrants contribute greatly to America’s identity, shaping its culture, economy, and diversity. However, without fair access to opportunities, rights, and welcoming communities, much of their contribution goes unnoticed, preventing society from fully benefiting from their impact.
