Abstract
How do we detect gerrymandering? Created by lawyers to address this question in a particular way, the efficiency gap is a calculation that assigns a value to a state’s legislative divisions based on election results. Proponents argue that the value could help the courts objectively determine the presence of gerrymandering. Mathematicians have proved enough nuances in its properties to give us pause in implementation. This work shares some of those nuances.
