Abstract
For my environmental ethics class I was assigned the direction to write down and make others and myself aware of my own personal environmental ethical philosophy. I believe that the environment should be centered on maximizing the well-being and life of all entities on it. This is a very Utilitarian approach and I understand it has its flaws. But uniquely, I believe that chemicals, GMO’s, and other scientific innovations push us towards this goal and not the other way around. To achieve the world with the greatest efficiency, greatest habitation, and greatest variety of life, the topic of discussion has to be humans. Being the dominant species means we also hold the most burden for understanding and fighting to ensure our planet remains habitable for us and as many animals as we can. I build upon these thoughts and establish this frame of reasoning later on when I talk about plastic waste and the strides technology and research is taking to actively remove plastic from our environment, and not just slow down its usage. I believe inherently that both have to be done for a healthy Earth, but too much load has been placed on the common man to fix the problems caused by massive corporations, and instead I believe we as people can instead focus on research and development to fix the problems being caused by others.
