Abstract

New managers have a difficult job. Typically, they were promoted because of their strong technical skills. Now they must adjust to the quite different responsibility of using soft skills to manage a team while ensuring results. This includes people challenges like providing helpful feedback, addressing poor performance, resolving conflict, balancing workloads, and supporting team members in times of crisis. And, of course, they still must find time to do their own work. Many new managers describe it as a game of ‘whack a mole’: As soon as they knock down one problem, another pops up.
