Abstract

Background:

Prescription expedited partner therapy (RxEPT) is a prescription for the sexual partner(s) of a patient with a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can be written without the need for the partner(s) to have their own clinical exam. Studies show that EPT reduces STI reinfection by approximately 20%. Despite permissibility in 46 states, studies indicate that knowledge and utilization of RxEPT among prescribers and pharmacists is low. This study aims to assess current knowledge, utilization, and barriers along the RxEPT care continuum as a first step in optimization of county-wide use.

Methods:

This cross-sectional study is the first step in a 3-phase community-based RxEPT initiative. Online surveys of prescribers and pharmacists in Monroe County, NY will be distributed July 2023 and analyzed August 2023. Participants will receive an email with survey link via collaborations with professional organization listservs. Survey questions include respondent demographics, RxEPT utilization factors (prescribing/filling), and suggestions for improved use. Outcomes for prescribers and pharmacists will be assessed using descriptive and bivariate statistics and summarized both separately and collectively to understand needs along the RxEPT continuum.

Results:

Factors associated with RxEPT utilization will be summarized including understanding of guidelines, point of care services, and site-specific barriers. Respondent suggestions for strategies to optimize RxEPT use will also be reported.

Conclusions:

Results from this study will provide an overview of RxEPT utilization factors, including knowledge, challenges, and future strategies for RxEPT use. These findings will inform methodological development of the next steps in a county-wide 3-phase initiative.
