Abstract

The promotion of a culture of patient safety in the long-term care (LTC) arena requires educational programs that incorporate an interdisciplinary approach to focus on resident safety while honoring resident autonomy and end of life wishes. In 2015, the Academy for Leadership in Long-Term Care received a grant to train staff from local LTC facilities on the principles, strategies and techniques of TeamSTEPPS®. This training, which occurred on a college campus, provided TeamSTEPPS® education for over 40 nurses, social workers, housekeepers, administrators, nursing assistants, therapists and unit secretaries. The results indicated that due to the implementation of the program, there were significant changes in the participants’ individual roles and responsibilities, team communication, knowledge of assessment and monitoring, and the use of handoff communications to improve patient safety.
