Abstract
Chapter 11:
Partnerships are an arrangement where parties agree on a common purpose and commitment and mutually acceptable relationships for meeting desired goals (Beal, 2012; Beal et al., 2012; Boland, Kamikawa, Inouye, Latimer, & Marshall, 2010). In these relationships, each partner has goals but may not independently have the required structures, resources, or talents available to achieve the goals. Academic--practice partnerships are collaborative relationships formed between clinical practice settings and academic programs to combine talents and advance mutual interests in research, practice, and education (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 1997; Interprofessional Education Collaborative Expert Panel, 2011). In nursing, such partnerships are typically formed to combine abilities and capacity based on mutual interests. These interests may be related to preparing the future nursing workforce, conducting research projects, providing interprofessional education, improving quality and patient care, and "advancing nursing practice to improve the health of the public" (American Association of Colleges of Nursing--American Organization of Nurse Executives [AACN--AONE] Task Force on Academic--Practice Partnerships 2012, p. 1). Alliances may be formal or informal and may involve inpatient acute care facilities within a defined geographic area or non-acute care settings, such as long-term care, community health, and schools of nursing (Dobalian et al., 2014).
