Abstract
Sickle cell disease (SCD) affects approximately 100,000 individuals in the U.S., 90% of whom are Black Americans. Adults with SCD frequently present to the emergency department (ED) with vaso-occlusive episodes and other acute complications requiring timely, evidence-based care. Despite national guideline recommendations, emergency care remains inconsistent. Under-triage, delays in analgesia, and variability in care contribute to preventable morbidity, mistrust in healthcare, and substantial economic burden. The purpose of this project was to evaluate ED care for adults with SCD against evidence-based national guidelines.
