Abstract
Despite occupying the majority of the earth’s surface, the world’s oceans occupy little of human attention. Yet, from the fish you eat to the goods you receive that are manufactured abroad; the oceans are intricately tied to everyday life. The Law of the Sea creates jurisdiction and accountability on the oceans, but it also provides for loopholes that enable abuses. Additionally, the remote nature of the oceans makes it difficult for states to exercise their jurisdiction. This project focuses on how the unique nature of the oceans both legally and physically contributes to the insecurity faced by individuals who depend upon the oceans.
