Abstract

Objective

To develop and evaluate a structured, year-long program integrated into the experiential curriculum of the final year of the Pharm.D. program, aimed at enhancing licensure exam preparation.

Methods

The initiative was designed to integrate core content review for the NAPLEX licensure exam into the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPEs).  Structured board review sessions that included up to three therapeutic topics and other key areas of the NAPLEX were delivered on the last day of each APPE block.  Midway through the APPE year, NAPLEX prep software provided formative feedback based on the NAPLEX blueprint. The software was used multiple times thereafter. Data was compiled, evaluated, and adjusted to integrate targeted content for specific needs.

Results

Upon completion of the first formative assessment delivered using the NAPLEX prep software,  five specific areas of the NAPLEX 2021 blueprint were identified as opportunities for improvement. In comparison to the index year, in which scores declined on subsequent assessments, modifications to the review session content resulted in higher scores during year 1 and 2.  Additionally, when comparing the index year to year 1 and 2, performance in calculations and compounding nearly doubled.  Obtaining and interpreting patient information, developing and managing treatment plans remained neutral.

Conclusions

Integrating a structured, year-long initiative into the final year of the Pharm.D. experiential curriculum enables repeated formative assessments.  to guide board preparation needs of Pharm.D. graduates. Revisions to the topics covered in the board preparation program and scheduling contributed to the improvement in scores earlier in the year compared to the index year. Further research is needed to evaluate the impact of this board preparation program on licensure exam performance.
