Abstract
Intelligent assistive technologies (IATs) and smart-home IoT systems are increasingly used to support older adults aging in place by improving independence and reducing caregiver burden. While these technologies can enhance safety, daily functioning, and autonomy through tools like sensors, health tracking, and AI systems, their effectiveness is inconsistent and often depends on usability and caregiver support. Significant ethical concerns such as privacy, autonomy, informed consent, and data security remain, especially for individuals with cognitive impairments. Additionally, barriers including cost, digital literacy, and accessibility limit widespread adoption. Overall, these technologies show strong potential, but their success depends on ethical design, user-centered development, and improved access.
