Abstract
Research question: What influences an American childhood experience related to physical education and what has this fitness culture looked like before and now? What should we do about it to improve P.E. for future generations of children?
Summary: The history of fitness in America, social influences, and the media, all factor into how an American child experiences physical education. Children are exposed to unwanted pressures in sport, misguided in their physical education, and often lack the opportunity to exercise their rights and agency. What children need most from adults is to be allowed to explore.
It was found that the history of fitness culture, parenting styles, role models in and out of the home, as well as time and financial and limitations influence a child’s experience and development with physical education here in America. For better or worse, the findings can better prepare all of us for our roles in providing adequate physical education to children in America.
