Abstract

The General Chemistry I Laboratory is a fundamental component of the scientific curriculum, and a meaningful experience within it is crucial for cultivating student interest in STEM fields. Over the summer of 2023, the laboratory curriculum was redesigned in aim to create a more engaging learning experience for students. Since then, each semester students have taken pre- and post-class surveys to describe their experiences. These surveys provide valuable information to assess the new curriculum, but it is not the same as talking to students personally. In order to better understand how students perceive this new curriculum we conducted a qualitative study using small‑group focus interviews. The use of focus groups allowed students to share personal experiences and perspectives in a conversational space. Groups of three to five students participated in guided discussions exploring topics such as group work, lab skills, lab setup, and concept understanding. The transcript from each focus group was then coded using DedooseTM software to observe trends or patterns. This data was then compared with the responses from Fall 2024 surveys in order to establish patterns between the semesters. Common themes included increased application of concepts, group work being beneficial, skill development, and curriculum misalignment.
