Abstract
Energy drinks, particularly Celsius brand, have become an increasingly popular source of caffeine in recent years. However, when researching caffeine's effects as an ergogenic aid, caffeine pills or coffee are most often used as the supplement, and most subjects are general population adults. Not much is known about the effects of caffeine from Celsius, especially on college student athletes. This project examines the steps necessary in designing a double-blind, placebo-controlled, within-subject human research study. The study, taking place in the fall of 2026, will examine whether caffeine affects not only VO2max performance, but also energy substrate utilization during exercise.
