There are more than 1.1 million street gang members and over 30,000 street gangs in theUnited States. Street gangs exist in all 50 American states and are found in all socioeconomic classes and in all racial and ethnic groups. For some citizens, the problems presented by gangs are a daily nightmare. For others, their knowledge of gangs is based on second-hand reports or what they hear from various sources of popular culture. After all, most people prefer not to mingle with street gangsters. Street gangs are portrayed in film, music, television, videos, video games, books, cyberspace, and sports. In this paper, a number of examples of street gang portrays in popular culture will be discussed.
