Abstract
My presentation focused on analyzing the crushability of immediate-release oral tablets and capsules recently approved by the FDA, specifically for patients unable to ingest whole tablets or capsules. This analysis was grounded in previously established questions concerning the drugs' special dosage forms, as well as their safety, chemical, and physical stability. It offered in-depth insights for caregivers, healthcare providers, and patients, enabling them to make more informed decisions about manipulating immediate-release tablets and capsules. This approach moves beyond the generic advice found in package inserts, which often vaguely state "do not chew or crush" without addressing the issue directly. The findings were shared at the annual national conference of the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP).
