Abstract
This observational report focuses on the implication of the Picture Exchange Communication System and its effects on the communication and language development on a student with Autism. The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) is a system designed for children with Autism and children with severe speech delays. Through the exchange of pictures these children are trained to initiate communication. This study was carried out in a 12:1:1 k-2 classroom with a seven year old boy named Adam. Phases I through IV were implemented into his routine and the results were recorded. Through the use of the picture exchange Adam's ability to communicate his needs increased.
