Abstract
What vocabulary, not specific to any particular content area, do students need to know to maximize their achievement on standardized tests? This study focused on the New York State Living Environment Regents Exam, analyzing a total of 27 tests using the software program FREQUENCY for the non-specific vocabulary most commonly used by the test developers. With more importance being assigned to standardized tests such as the Regents with the advent of the No Child Left Behind Act, students who do not already have the skills to incorporate unknown vocabulary risk earning scores that do not reflect their true academic abilities. A total of 127 words were compiled from the analysis into a list of terms to know for the exam.
