Description
Devoted to a pursuit as secret as it is harmless, Juan, the narrator and protagonist of The Borderland, discreetly listens in on the conversations of strangers as he moves through New York City each day. Otherwise, Juan’s dual life as a translator by trade and a linguist by passion unfolds largely without incident—until one morning, on the subway, he eavesdrops on a conversation in Spanish and hears a few words that unleash an unexpected flood of memories from his time in New Mexico, still remarkably vivid despite the years that have passed. What begins spontaneously as a winding, fragmented narrative whose sole aim is to recapture the past gradually turns into a relentless reckoning with the present and with the ever-growing uncertainties closing in on him. The Borderland is a novel about memory and the passage of time; about migration and uprootedness as global experiences; about the Hispanic heritage of the United States; and about the indelible imprint of language on who we are and how we inhabit the world.
