Abstract
I intend this StoryMap to serve four purposes. First, I want it to be useful for adding to the history of scientific expeditions in the late nineteenth century, specifically for the Philippines and also for the history of science more generally. Second, I want it to be useful for understanding Philippine ornithology, particularly in a historical context. Third, I want it to provide an understanding of how two Americans understood their experiences in the Philippines at a moment just a few years before the Philippines became a place of widespread interest for the United States. Finally, I want it to add to the history of photography in Asia. This StoryMap does not include all of the photographs taken during the Menage Expedition, but it does show a good sampling, and I hope it allows readers to better understand how to disaggregate the Menage Expedition photographs from the Dean Worcester collection of photographs , most of which are now housed at the University of Michigan.
