Abstract

The increase reliance on Artificial Intelligence (AI) has surfaced as a defining tool of modern education, reshaping the way student process, learn, and create. AI tools such as ChatGPT is being integrated into classrooms and personal work, and questions arise about its effect on student’s creativity and critical thinking. This study examines how the use of AI for idea generation influences students‘ creative performance. Thirty-three students participated in a poem-writing task, to test the strength and ability of the tool. Participants were randomly assigned to one of the two groups: those who used ChatGPT to assist in brainstorming and those who relied solely on their independent thinking. Creativity was measured based on ranking of each poems, the amount of strategies used, and number of unique words used. Students also provided feedback on satisfaction and how difficult they perceived the task to be. Results indicated that students who used AI had more difficulty in writing the poem, but produced writings that rated more creative than those who did not use AI. Furthermore, although AI poems enhanced idea flow and confidence, it diminished the students’ opportunity for critical thinking. Based on qualitative data collected, AI is a valuable tool for generating ideas, however, there should be a balance in using this tool in a academic setting.
