Abstract
In lieu of an abstract, here is the editorial's first paragraph:
The nexus of journalism and democracy is embedded in America’s history and journalism’s ethos. The Zenger trial established that truthful criticism of government was no crime, and the First Amendment enshrined the principle by proclaiming that “Congress shall make no law” infringing on press freedom. The Supreme Court subsequently used that amendment to create an actual malice standard for libels against public officials and to support publication of the Pentagon Papers, to cite just two high-profile interpretations. Progressive Era muckraking exposés of business and political institutions a century ago were followed by coverage of the Watergate affair a few decades later, and the Boston Globe’s Spotlight investigation more recently.
